Ice Check 2019

Post by EauBuoy » Mon Jan 14, 2019 6:21 pm

A local came today to get some minnows. Went to check on him at Erie-O Motel and Marina. Was pleasantly surprised to see 3 inches in the marina. Long before i got there he landed a hammer handle pike.

What about the big marinas? Is that freezing as well?

GOOD SIGN!!!

Thanks for the update! I am gonna swing down there Saturday and poke my head in and see if there's enough ice to fish in one of the other marinas.

Be a while yet until the bay freezes probably eh?

Hopefully we get a thumbs up by thursday/Friday - but after the weekend I suspect some people will start venturing out - cold temps coming!!

I think im still gonna poke my head in and check the marina ice thickness.

Well I had the gf go check for me today luckily she lives in Shrewsbury lol

She said it is there but is very thin, and melted in spots with geese keeping spots open here and there.

DAMN GEESE!

Deep freeze coming though so maybe next weekend?! She didn't check the canals or marinas though I feel like marinas might have 4 inches - maybe not after today.

I haven't been on the bay this week and I have not seen anyone out there this week/weekend either. I have been on the marina the last few days. The quality of the ice is not there yet, although it was quite thick. It was 6 inches of very low density ice on top of 2 inches of high density ice. I been hoping to get feedback from folks coming into the store, but the ice is young yet. Some cold weather coming starting tomorrow night for the next week. That should tighten it back up. I'll try the bay friday morning if I can, afternoon if i can't.

Here we are Jan 23rd and still no consistent ice, even after an extreme cold spell....what the havens is going on.
Rondeau, St Clair and the Thames was shaping up nicely to salvage a somewhat ice season and now a mild rain.....gggrrrrr

Sorry for the rant but the time clock is ticking for this ice season, it will take a few weeks to heal and to get the water clarity to get to a fishable colour with all of the creek run-off

Yeah it finally froze up on the shrewsbury side and its open again in spots after the rain.

Messed up how much 1 day like that can ruin everything.

Hoping to try somewhere out there Sat or sun or both - maybe rondeau joes side.

Well Saturday was a bust had 1 bass take my minnow a nice one he spit my hook while in the hole I didn't bother scooping him out since he's out of season.

Sunday I was only out a few hours brought the hut but didnt use it - moved around and found a spot that was producing - 3:30ish-4:30ish the bite turned on a bit and I caught 7 perch in that time - kept an 8 incher when it turned on hoping for a few more, then just dinks but landed a nice 11 inch toad and missed another nice hit on my other rod - one nice fatty though and hopefully a sign of good things to come!

Nice strong ice - even the open spots are frozen you can definitely tell where they were though before the snow came - 4-5 inches at least in those spots and the rest is 7-8 inches now.

I suspect by the weekend machines can get out there with the cold weather coming!! I'd even say it would be safe already in most spots for machines but I'm sure there's a weak spot or two left out there but not for long!

NP - more people out there Sunday than Saturday.

Part of me just wants to use a vaca day tomorrow and take the sled out for a rip down to the bay and punch a few more holes out there!!

The itch has been scratched but just barely! lol

Had a decent afternoon a few perch once I found them finally - missed something big took the pole almost right out of my hands into the hole when I was being a bit careless reaching for my beverage.

Big pike or bass probably - nice EB minnow on there.

That spot was dead after that so I moved over the first pressure crack (shrewsbury side) and fished over there did eventually hunker down in the hut and found a few perch then silence......then a decent 23 inch pike smoked my one minnow and I did get him iced.

Put him back to swim another day. Beauty day out there Friday might be a bit until its hard again after this crap weather but I'd say 10 inches out there in most spots it will survive

Any reports on ice conditions?

I suspect it's starting to honeycomb by now hopefully the base holds onto at least 4 inches on average - MB has about 7 inches they said but some weak spots - hoping to get out this weekend Sunday at least with some colder weather coming to freeze up this rain - hopefully its not pure mud....which im sure it will be lol.

Kinda crappy conditions Sunday - toughed it out though and got rewarded.

A bunch of dinks then something nearly took my rod down the hole had to do the old run slide and grab technique - almost lost it - on the other end was a toad 13 inch perch - my new personal best.

He was the only keeper I think I also got my personal smallest perch in my other hole 15 feet way lol weird day.

EB MINNOWS all the way for another PB!!
